(29)Lycopersicon esculentum has a HTS of 4-5 g and 200-250 seeds in 1 g. Tomatoes are a demanding crop requiring careful agrotechnics. They require a warm and sheltered location. Fertilise the soil in autumn with farmyard manure. When pre-growing seedlings, sowing is done in March. At the stage when the true leaves start to form, the plants are transplanted. Plant in unheated fast-growing greenhouses in the second half of April, outside in the bed after 15 May, 3-4 plants per m2. Provide regular watering at longer intervals. The greatest need for water occurs at the time of fruit formation, less water is needed when the fruit ripens. Always water after harvest to reduce the risk of fruit cracking. Watering by flooding is preferable.
